In some cases, we’re not always prepared for emergency situations where our fresh water supply is cut off from us. We’re so used to having water available with the switch of a faucet that we forget sometimes how lucky we are to have it.

If you have a hot water tank in your home, you can use the water from it to drink in emergency situations. We wouldn’t recommend you drink this water unless it is an emergency because it will be higher in mineral content.
Filtering the water can be done with an ordinary t-shirt, cloth, or anything that is woven tightly enough to catch sediments, dirt, or other solids.
Every water heater has a flush out valve that looks like a water faucet. Attach an ordinary garden hose to this faucet after turning the water inlet valve to the water heater off. Be sure the connection is tight and not leaking. Turn the faucet on and water will come out of the hose.

Heat the water to a full rolling boil for 1 minute. Allow to cool before using. This may take up to 30 minutes. Boiled water can be used for drinking, cooking, and washing.
