In some cases, we’re not always prepared for emergency situations where our fresh water supply is cut off from us. We’re so used to having water available with the switch of a faucet that we forget sometimes how lucky we are to have it.
Any time of natural disaster can cause our fresh water supply to go away, and having your pipes burst or frozen up is only one of them. During natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or flooding, you could be without water AND electrical power and/or gas.
The chance of this occurring could be very small, but if there’s a chance at all it’s worth be prepared for. You don’t want to find yourself stuck with having to wait for repairs to your water pipes while you have no access to fresh water.
The most basic of needs is for fresh water. Without it, we can become sick and dehydrated. There are several ways you can prepare, and saving water in bottles for emergencies is one of them.
You can purchase bottled water, but to save the expense it is just as easy to save a few milk jugs and use them. Many brands come with lids that screw on and will hold tight. Fresh water from the tap can be used directly.
If you have a hot water tank in your home, you can use the water from it to drink in emergency situations. We wouldn’t recommend you drink this water unless it is an emergency because it will be higher in mineral content.
Filtering the water can be done with an ordinary t-shirt, cloth, or anything that is woven tightly enough to catch sediments, dirt, or other solids.
Every water heater has a flush out valve that looks like a water faucet. Attach an ordinary garden hose to this faucet after turning the water inlet valve to the water heater off. Be sure the connection is tight and not leaking. Turn the faucet on and water will come out of the hose.
When water is heated to the degree of most water heater settings, it will take the minerals already in the water and heat them to where they start sticking and layering on surfaces.
This sediment deposit is called scale. If taken directly from the tank, the water could have a pretty high sediment content depending on how long the water heater has been accumulating scale and whether or not you have a filtration system that cleans the water prior to supplying the water heater.
If you have a Long Island whole home water filtration system or water softener, your tank should be very low in sediment content and may only need purification.
To purify water, you can use chlorine bleach. Every bottle will have instructions on how to purify water. Boiling is another method to purify water, killing bacteria and more. First, either filter the water or let it sit and carefully pour off the clean water on top to boil.
Heat the water to a full rolling boil for 1 minute. Allow to cool before using. This may take up to 30 minutes. Boiled water can be used for drinking, cooking, and washing.
Hopefully, the repairs to your Long Island frozen pipes will not take longer than you need to be without a fresh water source, but in case it ever will or does, you will be prepared if you have a plan for fresh water.
